Johnny Johnson

Johnnie C. Johnson, Sr., 65, of Pittsburgh, formerly of Erie, died Saturday, September 1, 2007, as a result of a train accident in Pittsburgh. He was born November 17, 1941, in Ellisville, MS, son of the late Tommy Lee “T.L.” Johnson, Sr. and Willie Etta Strickland Johnson. He moved to Erie with his family at an early age, was educated in the Erie School District, graduated from Academy High School and attended Second Baptist Church. After high school he enlisted in the U. S. Navy and was an honorably discharged veteran. He enrolled at Howard University and received his B.A. degree in Business and Accounting in 1970. He was retired from the U. S. Government where he was employed in the financial services section of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Johnnie was an active member of the Howard University Alumni Association and the NAACP, and was also highly active with the National Rifle Association through the Rosedale Sportsman Club (Pittsburgh) where he was recognized as a qualified sharpshooter. He was a licensed pilot and enjoyed flying single engine planes. He was an avid reader with a special interest in Black history, autobiographies and the history of wars. He loved his family, especially the young children, and will be dearly missed by all. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Tommy Lee Johnson, Jr. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Vivian Jenkins Johnson, Pittsburgh; a son, Johnnie C. Johnson, Jr., Pittsburgh; three daughters, Brenda M. Johnson, Springdale, Md., Eurydice Costicliola and her husband Frank, Long Island, N.Y., and Kim A. Johnson, Pittsburgh; three brothers, Henry E., Thomas J. and Larry G. Johnson, all of Erie; four sisters, Carolyn Moffett, Erie, Henrietta Brown and husband Charles, Phoenix, Ariz., and Charity Tate and husband Robert and Harriet Brown, all of Erie; three grandchildren, Vincent, Mitchell and Kimmia; an uncle, Robert Strickland and his wife Ruth; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. Friends may visit with the family Monday, 5 to 8 p.m., at Second Baptist Church, 757 E. 26th St., and may attend a funeral service at the church on Tuesday, 11 a.m., conducted by Rev. Dr. Allen B.
