A graduate of the 1960 Academy High School Class died Monday night, October 17, 1960, when the pickup truck he was driving went out of control and rolled over an embankment in Mina, N.Y. early Monday. He was Gerald Silk, 18, 3304 Perry St. Silk died at 9:55 p.m. He had sustained a fractured pelvis and internal injuries.
According to Deputy Sheriff Don Szejbka, Mayville, Silk told him his truck was moving east on State Route 430 when for no apparent reason it swerved out of control. He was moved to Westfield Memorial Hospital by the Findley Lake Fire Department and then transferred to Hamot. He had been making deliveries at the time in the Mayville area for an Erie firm, the D. C. Sullivan Novelty Company, 511 French.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete. They are being handled by A Brugger & Sons Funeral Home.
Gerald Edward Silk was a native of Johnstown, Pa. and a graduate of the class of 1960 of Academy High School. He was a member of Holy Rosary Church.
Surviving him are his mother, Dorothy Silk Nierakdo; his step-father Henry Nieradko; one sister, Judith Ann Silk; one brother, Daniel Silk; and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Florence Snyder of Johnstown. His father, Lt. Col. Edward A. Silk, was a holder of the congressional Medal of Honor for services during World War II.
Friends may call at the A. Brugger & Sons Funeral Home 429 E. 9th St., from 7 to 10 p.m. and Wednesday and Thursday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 10 p.m. and are invited to attend services there Friday morning at 8:30. A Requiem High Mass will be offered at the Holy Rosary Church at 9 a.m. and burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
