Erie County's seventh drowning victim was pulled from 25 feet of water in Lake Plesant Sunday, July 8, 1973.
The body of Gerald M. Ellsworth, thirty, 135 East 38th. was recovered by members of the Stancliff Hose Co. of Waterford, Kuhl Hose Co. of Greene Township and the sheriff's Department Scuba Diving, about 80 yards offshore at approximately 4:14 p.m. Ellsworth was fishing at the lake with two nephews and decided to go swimming. He dove into the water but failed to surface. The death was ruled an accidental drowning by County Coroner Merel Wood.
Mr. Ellsworth Was born in Erie on November 30, 1942 the son of Mrs. Geneyieve Ellsworth and the late Henry H Ellsworth. He graduated from Academy High School and was a peacetime veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was recently named manager of the American Income Life Company. He was a member of Cursillo Movement, an officer of Gannon College Gamma Sigma Mu Fraternity, director of "Parents Without Partners," and a member of the Scuba Divers at the YMCA.
He is survived by his mother and several uncles and cousins.
Friends may call at the A. Brugger and Sons Funeral Home, 449 E.9th, Monday and Tuesday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to attend services Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of the Resurrection at St. Luke's Church at 9 a.m. Friends and members of St. Luke's Church are also invited to the Wake Service Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
