Chuck Evanoff

Cranberry Teacher, injured in fall, dies. Charles H. Evanoff. 30, of Surnack Drive, Seneca RD 1, Cranberry Area High School teacher and wrestling coach died at 12:35 pm Sunday in Hamot Medical Center, Erie.

Mr. Evanoff had been in critical condition with head injuries since a fall from his roof September 25. He fell approximately 18 feet and landed on a cement patio. He was transferred from Oil City Hospital to Hamot September 30 for brain surgery.

An outstanding athlete in both football and wrestling at Thiel College in Greeenville, Mr. Evanoff had been Spanish teacher and wrestling coach at Cranberry for the past 3 years. Born in Erie November 14, 1942, he was the son of Charles and Isabelle Delporto Evanoff. He graduated in 1960 from Academy High School in Erie where he was a letterman in football and wrestling. He entered Thiel College in 1960, to major in foreign languages, and later was named captain of Thiel's varsity football and wrestling teams. In his final year at Thiel he was named "Outstanding Senior Athelete" in 1964 and named to the Coaches Little All-American Football Team, honorable mention, in 1963 and was two-time P.A.C wrestling champion, in 1963 and 1964 in the 177-pound class.

Mr Evanoff who took graduate work at Gannon College in Erie, came to Cranberry High School in 1964. after graduating from Thiel. and took charge of the school's wrestling program, at that time intermural. The following year 1965-1966, the school entered interscholastic wrestling and, under the leadership of Mr. Evanoff, has produced in the years since, a number of section champions and Venago County's first state wrestling champion Raymond Frantz, who wrestled at 98 pounds and took the state title last year, a crowning point in his coach's career. Two years ago, Mr. Evanoff was named "Coach of the Year" in Section 4 District 10 wrestling. He also served as assistant track coach at Cranberry for 8 years, up until last year and as advisor to the school's Varsity Club. He was a member of St. John The Baptist R. C. Church in Erie and attended St. Stephen Church in Oil City.

He is survived by his wife, the former Joanne Crowther, three daughters, Susan, Allison and Elizabeth at home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Evanoff of Erie; a brother, Peter W. Evanoff of Erie; three sisters, Mrs. William (JoAnn) Demyanovich, Mrs. James (Jackie) Menzel and Mrs Christopher (Cynthia) Mack, all of Erie; his maternal grandmother, Mrs Harry Delporto of Erie, six nephews and two nieces, and several aunts and uncles.

Friends will be received this evening at the Russel C Schmidt Funeral Home at Pine Avenue in Erie. Removal will be made to the Charles A. Morrison Funeral Home, where friends may call after 3 pm Tuesday and where the family will receive friends from 3 to 4 and 7 to Tuesday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm Wednesday. Funeral arrangements will be announced.
