Calvin Lee Ott passed away peacefully from this life the morning of January 24, 2021 in Lawrenceville, Georgia.

Born in Erie, Pennsylvania to Lester Ott (d) and Mittie Louise Cameron Ott Gray (d) on September 25, 1941, Calvin graduated from Academy High School in Erie, Pennsylvania. A year after high school, he had a happenstance moment of meeting his future wife Rachel Mae Powell Ott (d) while she was visiting her sister for the summer and picking cherries from a tree. They were married on December 28, 1963 in Fort Motte, South Carolina and shared 33 beautiful years together until her passing.

Calvin had a humble but meaningful life. In high school, Calvin used to have the nickname "The Professor" because he was very smart with math and numbers. During the early time of the Civil Rights era, Calvin's parents had resources for only his eldest brother Leon to go to college. So after high school, he joined the Merchant Marines, where he was a hired cook on the ships. From his early years in South Carolina, Calvin worked in cotton fields with his wife. Later living in Erie, PA, Calvin was a local toymaker for Marx Toys. He was a nurse at Hamot Hospital and a machinist, assembling the inner gasoline tank parts at Smith Meters where he worked for 15+ years. In 1983, he moved his family to Columbia, Maryland, where he worked at Hecht Company, a local department store and WSSC in Prince Georges County. His last job role was at Howard County General Hospital as Environmental Services Lead. After his wife's passing, Calvin moved in 1998 to Lawrenceville, GA working in various sales roles before his retirement.

The enriched pieces of Calvin's life were a woven tapestry that wrapped around the arts. Showcasing his bass vocals, Calvin was a member of the doo-wop group the Chandeliers. Later in Maryland, Calvin sang with the Heaven 600 Gospel Choir and Voices of Victory & Praise, along with his active participation in the Male Chorus at the First Baptist Church of Guilford in Columbia. He was a learned saxophone player and pianist. His daughters were influenced by his love of music, and each developed their own accolades in music and song.

But Calvin's God-given talent for a brush stroke surpassed anything he has ever done. His love for scenic landscapes were easily purposed on canvas. Combined with a peaceful and spiritual imagination, he has created well over 300 pieces, nearly 50 of them commissioned. The vision put forth with acrylic as his medium, as well as driftwood pieces, and art on glassware, Calvin knew he was building a legacy for his grandchildren and their children to come.

Waiting for Calvin in Glory was his mother and father, his wife Rachel Mae Powell Ott, his children Rodney Ott, Latrell A. Ott, Jeremy L. Ott, brother Leon D. Ott and nephew Vincent Ott.

Calvin is survived by his daughters Valerie Marie Johnson and her husband Charles Johnson, Capucine Hines and her husband Joseph D. Hines, Jamelia Thompson and her husband Charles B. Thompson and D'Etta Monique Ott and spouse Yusuf Stroud: his sister Emily Louise Gray, his sister-in-law Ellen W. Ott along with his niece Morgan Ott and nephews Cameron Ott, Leon Dexter Ott II and Michael Ott: Grandchildren – Julian D. Hines, Charles James Johnson I, LaRecia A. Hines, Justus D. Hines, Abigail FM Hines, Devon C. Thompson and Jaden C. Thompson. With a wonderful host of 14 great-grandchildren, cousins, many more nieces and nephews through marriage bonds, Calvin had a rich life of love with family.

Calvin left a legacy with countless individuals, always willing to share a story or a lesson to capture. He made everyone smile and listened attentively to his wisdom. Affectionately called "Pops", Calvin was an incredible treasure that so many will miss but have hope in the moments shared with him through the years.
